The legend of the chupacabra, which means “goat-sucker” in English, allegedly originated in Puerto Rico in the early 1990s. The story quickly spread throughout Latin America, with people reporting sightings of the creature attacking and drinking the blood of livestock, particularly goats.
Director Jonás Cuarón found the legend of the chupacabra both frightening and exciting as a child, saying that it sparked his curiosity and imagination. Demián Bichir, who stars in “Chupa,” added that the mythical creature never actually existed but represents a fascinating aspect of Latin American culture.
Cuarón also emphasized the importance of grandparents as oral historians who keep family traditions and folklore alive through storytelling. In “Chupa,” the character of Alex goes on a journey of self-discovery as he reconnects with his roots and his grandfather, who helps him come to terms with the loss of his father.
